is a response to the alarming increase of childhood obesity. The Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE), in cooperation with The Health Trust and Healthy Silicon Valley, launched the program in 2005. In the first year we focused on 5th grade students in Santa Clara County. Last year we expanded to kindergarten through sixth grade. This year, fit for learning is in place at more than 100 schools.

School Wellness Assessment
The SCCOE has developed a fit for learning School Wellness Assessment Tool to help school sites assess how they are implementing their district's Local Wellness Policy.

Meet Our Co-Chairs
The success of fit for learning hinges on support from our community. Meet two community members who have been instrumental in advocating for our program: Carl Guardino and Eric Schlosser.

What Works
We asked some fit for learning participants to tell us how the program works at their school sites. (If you have a best practice to share for fit for learning, please let us know.)

Making Good Choices
Parents who want to monitor their child's food choices might find it challenging to extend their influence inside school walls. But some new systems make it easier for parents to help in the battle between nutritious fare and junk food.
