One Class' Pledge to Start a Health Revolution

The students in Peter Pham's 4th and 5th grade class at K.R. Smith Elementary in San Jose made a pledge. Inspired by the fit for learning program, they resolved to exercise, eat healthy foods, and cut down on non-nutritious food and beverages. In the following letter, Mr. Pham expresses his own excitement about fit for learning, and then shares an eight-minute video chronicling his students' efforts.

"I can honestly say that receiving the fit for learning training inspired me in many ways to change the way I teach and live my life.

After being trained, I took the information back to my school and formed a school-wide wellness committee to help students, parents and staff members. I shared with my administration and other teachers how easy and useful this binder is to implement into the classroom. I developed a classroom theme based on the information, activities, and other great handouts the ffl binder provided.

My students were completely happy to be on board with me. They were all excited about trying to take a more active role in living a healthier lifestyle.

I cannot say enough good things about this program. This binder will always be a part of my classroom curriculum. From the California standards being listed for activities to the big monthly poster, the binder helps any teacher start a health revolution in the classroom."

ffl News and Events

The fit for learning (ffl) Program received a generous donation in the amount of $25,000 from the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation, presented during the Santa Clara County Board of Education meeting on July 21, 2011. These monies were raised via the King of the Mountain Cycling event, sponsored by the Silicon Valley Leadership group on May 18, 2011.

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group works to promote a high quality of life for all populations within Silicon Valley, by organizing senior managers and principal officers of member companies with various local, state, and federal government leaders to impact public policy and practice issues related to community health and wellness. The funds will allow the ffl Program to continue to provide valuable health and nutrition education and services to children across Santa Clara County. The check was presented by Mr. Carl Guardino, President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, to Santa Clara County Board President, Mr. Joseph DiSalvo.

Thank you!!
