'Pasta Bowl' Benefits ffl
"Pasta Bowl II," the charity dinner at which members of the San Francisco 49ers served as celebrity waiters,
included fit for learning in the programs that were recipients
of the fund-raising activities this year.
The August 2008 event, co-sponsored by the 49ers and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group,
raised $25,000 for fit for learning. Among those attending were Michelle Mount,
ffl coordinator,
and Dr. Charles Weis, Santa Clara County superintendent of schools.

Associations Honor Campaigns
Both the state and national school public relations associations honored the campaign to promote
fit for learning in 2008.
The California School Public Relations Association (CalSPRA) gave its highest honor,
the California Gold Award, to the COE's campaign for the ffl.
California Gold is described by CalSPRA as "the top statewide recognition honoring superior educational
public relations programs."
The campaign also earned a Golden Achievement Award from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA).

County Supervisors Commendation
The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution on Dec. 11, 2007,
commending fit for learning
"for its work promoting healthy nutrition and physical
activity in the school environment for the children of Santa Clara County."
The resolution was introduced by Supervisor Liz Kniss.

Activate America Award of Excellence
fit for learning received an "Award of Excellence" from Activate America in November
2006 for "working toward changing the culture and behavior of children and adults to live healthier
lives." Activate America is a national YMCA initiative designed to address national obesity
trends. The YMCAs of the Mid-Peninsula and of Santa Clara Valley were chosen two years ago to
be one of 14 sites across the country to help design a community-wide approach toward healthier
living.

fit for learning Teacher Given Governor's Medal
Peter Pham was one of the first local teachers to follow the fit for learning
Program in his classroom - and his efforts won him the 2006 Bronze Medal from
the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Pham was nominated by
the COE for the statewide honor. At Smith Elementary School in San Jose, he
launched a "Walk Across America" series of daily hikes that amounted to
3,387 miles on his students' pedometers! Pham also integrated his
standards-based lessons in history, social studies and math into discussions on
fitness and health, and made a videotape of students exercising and eating
right.

FFL Commended by San Jose City Council
fit for learning, the school-based initiative promoting healthy nutrition and physical fitness for
students throughout Santa Clara County, was officially commended in April 2006
by the San Jose City Council. Colleen Wilcox, County Superintendent of
Schools, accepted the commendation from San Jose Mayor Ron Gonzales, Councilman
Ken Yeager, and other members of the City Council. The program's creators were
recognized "for their revolutionary vision and innovative strategies to create
school environments that promote healthy nutrition and physical activity for
children," according to Councilman Yeager.
