School leaders and supporters of the SCCOE's fit for learning
program were honored at a first-annual "Recognition Event" at San
Jose's Tech Museum in January.
The program involves School-based Champions, who work with teachers,
students, and parents to promote fitness and good health - while
having fun at the same time. About 125 teachers and parents have
been trained as Champions.
Steve Berta, coordinator of ffl for the SCCOE, told the champions:
"You are the cornerstone of ffl and the key to our success. Your
commitment & creativity are reflected in the many ways you've
changed your school culture - getting couch potatoes on their feet
and making fitness a priority for Santa Clara County kids."
The program's "Wally Award" - named for Dr. Wally Bortz, and created
to honor a supporter who has made exceptional contributions to the
program - was given to
Mary Hoshiko, vice president of program and community development
for YMCA of Santa Clara Valley.
