Making Good Choices

Parents who want to monitor their child's food choices might find it challenging to extend their influence inside school walls. But some new systems make it easier for parents to help in the battle between nutritious fare and junk food.

For example, online parental checkup systems allow parents whose children attend participating districts to have a say in what their kids buy at the school cafeteria. They can prepay for the meal, and also track their child's purchases.

Two such systems are MealpayPlus.com and ParentOnline.net.

Meanwhile, a Texas school district has developed its own program to help parents and students learn about the foods offered in its schools. It's called a "virtual cafeteria." More information on the school's efforts can be found at MSNBC.com, along with some links to other nutrition issues.

ffl News and Events
The Santa Clara County Office of Education, fit for learning (ffl) Program received the Kaiser Permanente Obesity grant in Fall 2011. The goal of the Kaiser Obesity Grant is to fund programs that decrease calorie consumption, increase consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase physical activity in community and institutional settings. This goal is in line with the focus of the ffl Program, which enables teachers to integrate nutrition education and physical activity into their classroom lessons and activities. The Kaiser Obesity grant, in the amount of $27,500.00, will afford the ffl Program the opportunity to provide outreach to over thirty schools this year. Kaiser Permanente is an integral partner is supporting student health and wellness in schools communities across Santa Clara County.

Thank you!!
