What Works
Best Practices at School Sites

We asked some fit for learning participants to tell us how the program works at their school sites. (If you have a best practice to share for fit for learning, please let us know.)

Counselor Nicole Scott told us:

Allen at Steinbeck has really embraced the Fit For Learning Model. Two staff members and one parent have become Site Champions.

In October all students attended an assembly on healthy and unhealthy habits. This included food, exercise, sleep, schoolwork and more. Throughout the year classrooms have done lessons on nutrition and visited the new personalized food pyramid.

Because of our involvement with Fit For Learning, we have started YOGA in one 5th grade classroom with an instructor who has volunteered to work at our school. We hope to expand this program for next year.

The YMCA is doing afterschool programs at our site. One of those classes is called Healthy Eats. The course offers students the opportunity to learn healthy eating habits and how to prepare healthy snacks. Along with preparing their daily snack, students will also complete a craft project based on the nutrition lesson of the day.

The YMCA is also offering a free movement class. Our Music Support Committee is also offering an afterschool International Dance Club one day a week.

We look forward to continuing to learn and grow as a Fit For Learning School.
